When we make a change in our lives that greatly affects others they often become a barrier to our success. Why? Fear of change. As much as their life stinks with an alcoholic/addict, the people around us become accustomed to our poor behavior. In making changes to ourselves we create an even more uncontrollable, unexpected, and scary situation for the people close to us. We must understand that. This is also a strong reason to get them involved in our therapy and into their own groups. Otherwise, their fears may be a strong factor in our failure - not to say that you could blame them for your relapse, of course.
